Weekly Faculty in the News, 6/6

A roundup of faculty appearances in news sources and media from the last week.

5/28 – Professor Dan Tarlock was quoted in a Medill Reports story about threats to water conservation in the Chicago area (“As suburbs tap out wells, they thirst for limited Lake Michigan water“).

5/31 – Professor Chris Buccafusco’s recent post for the blog Jotwell: Intellectual Property was highlighted in an ABA Journal roundup of blog news (“Blaming the Baby Boomers; Do young children believe that ideas can be owned?“). In his post (featured on this blog last week), Buccafusco uses children’s conceptions about ownership of ideas to explore underlying principles of intellectual property.

6/3 – In a CBS 2 Chicago article and video (“Court Ruling On DNA Swabs Worries Local Privacy Advocates“), Professor Richard Kling and other privacy advocates expressed concern about the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on DNA swabs in Maryland v. King. The Court’s decision allows police officers to take DNA swabs from any person under arrest to see if his or her DNA matches DNA from unsolved cases.

Professor Kling also appeared on WBEZ Radio’s “Morning Shift” program on Wednesday to discuss the case and was featured in a Consumer Affairs article on the ruling (“Supreme Court OK’s DNA samples for arrestees“).

6/5 – Professor David Schwartz was quoted in a Chicago Tribune article about President Obama’s decision to target “patent trolls,” companies that “amass portfolios of patents to make money not from building new products but by pursuing licensing fees” (“Obama tries to curb firms known as ‘patent trolls’“; digitalPLUS account required to access).
